Limes 1

Aalen

Between the years 150/160 A.D.and 260/270 A.D., the frontier between the Roman empire and the free Germania reached further north than before or later.During these 100 years one of the largest cavalry forts at the Limes was placed in Alae, the present Aalen. To the military presence came a civilian settlement, which was catering to the necessities of the soldiers.

Today Aalen has a large Limes-museum showing rich archaeological findings from the surrounding neighbourhood. You can also admire excavated parts of the fort, the walls, a gate, the staff headquarters, a statue of the emperor Marcus Aurelius, etc.
